dominic thiem tennis

We have expert betting predictions for the US Open Men’s Tennis quarterfinals, which are played on Wednesday and Thursday.

The tournament is down to its final eight players, and with pre-tournament favourite, Novak Djokovic, out of the contest, it’s all up for grabs.

We look at Coric vs. Zverev, Carreno-Busta vs. Shapovalov, De Minaur vs. Thiem, and Rublev vs. Medvedev.

2020 Men’s US Open Quarterfinals Predictions

Borna Coric vs. Alexander Zverev

Alex Zverev has had a relatively easy time of it at the 2020 US Open. He has dropped only three sets and never looked under pressure. However, he hasn’t faced someone with the tenacity of Borna Coric yet.

Coric scored back-to-back five-set wins over Londero and Tsitsipas, with the latter being a modern-day epic. It was a high-quality game of tennis and he came out the other side with plenty of momentum.

He carried that momentum to beat Australian Jordan Thompson in straight sets, where he was too classy for the unseeded player.

Coric won the last meeting with Zverev, scoring a 2-0 win. However, that came in 2018 and they haven’t played each other since. Coric holds a 3-1 lifetime record against the German, so punters could get value for the 32nd ranked player.

Zverev is all class, and he hasn’t spent nearly as much time on the court as Coric. That could be a determining factor in this game, so go with the higher ranked player.

Betting tip: Alexander Zverev to win ($1.45) @ Sportsbet.com.au

Pablo Carreno-Busta vs. Denis Shapovalov

Pablo Carreno-Busta made the US Open quarterfinals by virtue of Novak Djokovic’s mishap on Monday. However, he was leading the set 6-5 at the time, so he was playing well.

The Spaniard went to five sets in his opening game against a tough opponent, but he hasn’t lost a set since. He will be the fresher player coming into this game, but can he overcome a talented Canadian with big power?

Denis Shapovalov overcame the tough David Goffin and although his play was shaky leading into that game, it holds him in good stead.

The 17th ranked player can be inconsistent, as he’s still young and learning the ropes. It makes betting on him hard for punters, and his head-to-head record against Carreno-Busta doesn’t read well.

Carreno-Busta has a 3-1 advantage over Shapovalov, and the Canadian has failed to win a set in three of his four games. That’s not a good statistic and punters are getting value with the Spaniard.

Betting tip: Pablo Carreno-Busta to win ($2.62) @ Sportsbet.com.au

Alex De Minaur vs. Dominic Thiem

We thought Alex De Minaur would make a deep run in the US Open and he hasn’t disappointed. The young Australian is playing superb tennis, but he has a tough test awaiting him.

De Minaur faces Dominic Thiem, who is coming off a steamrolling of Auger-Aliassime. It was a dominant performance by one of the best players in the world, and De Minaur knows how tough it is to face Thiem.

They have played each other twice over the course of three years, with Thiem winning six sets to De Minaur’s one. There is a sizable class advantage to the Austrian and that will make it tough for the Australian to cope.

Bookmakers have Thiem as the overwhelming $1.22 favourite, which isn’t bad value for the best player. We would love to see Alex De Minaur make it to a Grand Slam semifinal, but it’s unlikely to happen this week.

Betting tip: Dominic Thiem to win ($1.22) @ Sportsbet.com.au

Andrey Rublev vs. Daniil Medvedev

Two quality Russians to battle on Thursday and it should be a good match. However, we’re unsure if Rublev can stop the train that is Daniil Medvedev.

The current US Open favourite was devastating against Franis Tiafoe on Tuesday, dropping just five games across the three sets. It was a stellar performance, and although Tiafoe gave up, it was because Medvedev was so electric.

Rublev can handle tough opponents, given that he defeated Matteo Berrettini 3-1 on Tuesday. It was a comprehensive display after losing the first set.

Both players are good enough to make deep runs in major tournaments, but Medvedev is a class above at the moment. He has yet to drop a set in three games against Rublev, and he might not drop one here.

$1.30 is a short quote to take, but punters should include Medvedev in all tennis multi-bets this week.

Betting tip: Daniil Medvedev to win ($1.30) @ Sportsbet.com.au
