The English Super League season will grind to a halt this weekend to make way for the England vs France International fixture.

England have won their last 21 meetings including last year’s 60 to 4 thumping at Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington last April.

It’s nice to finally see some international fixtures in the north, with England set to take on France this weekend and a two-match series locked in against Samoa in October.

Fresh off a three-game series sweep against Tonga at the end of last year, Shaun Wane will be confident his side will continue that form against a side they posted 60 points on in April last year.

England’s NRL contingent not being able to take part in this fixture has opened several opportunities for players to make their debut.

Wigan Hooker Brad O’Neill, Castleford’s Sam Wood, Hull KR’s Elliot Minchella, Huddersfield’s Oliver Wilson, St Helens George Delaney and Leeds James McDonnell have all been named in the 19-man squad for the first time.

But there is still plenty of experience with George Williams, Jack Welsby and Luke Thompson among many others expected to feature.

But it will be an exciting occasion for French Rugby League who will celebrate 90 years of the game in the republic.

Their coach Laurent Frayssinous has named a mixed squad of experience and youth with 14 players being picked from the Catalans Dragons.

Benjamin Garcia, Théo Fages, Arthur Mourgue and César Rouge will all feature this weekend.

Coach Frayssinous believes this is the strongest side France has known for quite some time.

But looking across the park at England’s pack it’s hard to see them upsetting the visitors.

If they were to, it would be their first win over England in 44-years.

England have won by 20 points or more in their past six matchups against France.

While it would be nice to see a tightly contested battle – sadly I fear that’s still a few years away.
