Zabeel Classic Form Guide & Tips
(1) Ladies Man ($6.50)
Ladies Man downed La Crique last time out, so we’re not leaving the classy type out of our Zabeel Classic picks.
He once again gets the services of Opie Bosson, and although he has always struggled to put wins together, that could change here.
He’s worth including at the each-way odds.
(2) El Vencedor ($12.00)
A first-four chance if he brings his best form, which was enough to win two back at Ellerslie by 3.5 lengths over Wolfgang.
That form is solid enough at Group 1 level, and he only needs to bounce back after running poorly at Trentham.
(3) Meaningful Star ($23.00)
The eight-year-old seeks three consecutive wins, but he would need to lift to handle this level of racing.
We would prefer to back him in something easier, hence the double-figure odds.
(4) Skyman ($41.00)
The former Australian-based runner has had mixed success since returning to New Zealand, but he’s not running well enough.
His second placing two back was a solid effort when beating Witz End, but that’s not genuine Group 1 form, and his best days are behind him.
(5) Matscot (Best Roughie – $51.00)
Matscot races at longer odds than we priced him at, so we’re happy to include him in picks.
The seven-year-old started this prep with placings behind Perfect Scenario, One Bold Cat, and Kopua, so the form is solid enough.
It’s his first start at Ellerslie, but jockey Vinnie Colgan is a master around the Auckland circuit.
(6) Dionysus ($51.00)
His Australian campaign didn’t go to plan, and we think he was only over there as a traveling partner for Orchestral.
Returning to NZ is unlikely to see his form turn around, which is why bookmakers have him at big odds.
(7) La Crique (Best Each Way – $5.50)
La Crique was beaten on her merits last start but Ladies Man, but perhaps she hit the front too far from home.
Her win two back was one of the better finishes we have seen in some time, and going right-handed could see her winning form return.
Barrier four is ideal and she should finish in the first two.
(8) Snazzytavi (Best Bet – $1.75)
We’re not surprised by the odds-on price given her last three wins, which have been excellent.
She won by two lengths against a good field at Te Rapa, which followed a 3.5-length win over Hi Yo Sass Bomb, so the form checks out.
Our only worry is that she’s having her first start at Ellerslie, but the Group 1 winner is all class and she’s the top pick.
(9) Campionessa ($13.00)
She finished second behind Snazzytavi last start, so we’re happy to include her in first four picks.
The Te Akau-raced seven-year-old is a past winner at Ellerslie, and she owns five placings from eight starts over 2000m.
With Blake Shinn riding, we wouldn’t be surprised if she won.
(10) Bella Waters ($27.00)
Her form is solid enough at much lower levels, and we thought her odds would be around the $51.00 mark.
(11) Hi Yo Sass Bomb ($23.00)
She is Group 1 placed when running second behind Snazzytavi, but she wants moisture in the surface and she’s not going to get it.
