Winterbottom Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Overpass (Best Bet – $2.80)
He is gunning for three consecutive wins in the Winterbottom Stakes, which is why he’s our top pick over Jokers Grin.
His run for fourth in The Everest was tremendous, and it’s the best form guide for this race. We’re surprised that he’s not the favourite, and he’s not being given much respect as the two-time champion.
Overpass goes on top at $2.80, which is a fair price.
(2) Jokers Grin ($2.50)
There is no doubting his ability, having posted nine wins from 12 starts. He showed his class when downing Oscar’s Fortune on the line last start, and he has won big races before.
We wouldn’t have priced him at $2.50 to win, but he’s the obvious quinella hope with Overpass, so back him to run in the first two home.
(3) Oscar’s Fortune (Best Roughie – $18.00)
It took a good horse to run him down last time out, so he goes into the mix at $18.
He has yet to finish worse than third in eight attempts at Ascot, and there is nothing wrong with that record.
He should settle handy to the pace and be there in the finish.
(4) Rey Magnerio (Best Each Way – $9.00)
Melbourne form could stack up well in Perth, and he looked good winning at Caulfield fresh up before placing at Flemington.
The nine-time winner ventures west for the first time, but he’s an adaptable type who should give punters a good sight.
He likes firm ground, so the conditions should suit him.
(5) Rope Them In ($14.00)
He ran second behind Watch Me Rock last start, who won the Railway Stakes last week. Dropping to 1200m is an interesting tactic, but he’s a trifecta chance.
Barrier 10 doesn’t help his chances, but drawing wide has produced many Winterbottom Stakes winners recently.
(6) Libertad ($31.00)
We would love to see Libertad get back to his brilliant best, but we can’t see it happening in this race, hence the long odds.
(9) Repossession ($81.00)
There is little wrong with his form, but it hasn’t come at this level. He would need to improve a lot to beat this Group 1 field.
(10) Benedetta ($17.00)
The six-year-old mare is struggling to find her best form, and the $17 odds are a touch below where we priced her.
(11) Luana Miss ($9.00)
She is a three-year-old filly who gets in well at the weights. However, we can’t remember the last time a 3YO won the Winterbottom Stakes, and this is an elite field.
