The Hunter Form Guide & Tips
(1) Private Eye (Best Each Way – $7.50)
Getting $7.50 for a runner coming off a fifth in The Everest is good shopping, and he could score an overdue win on Saturday.
He’s a two-time winner at the distance, and despite being lumped with 60kg, he has been good enough to carry it to victory in the past.
(2) Coal Crusher (Best Roughie – $12.00)
Coal Crusher is perfectly named for racing at Newcastle, and that’s where he does his best racing with four starts for two wins and two seconds.
The seven-year-old will head forward and attempt to run them into the ground, which is easier to do at Newcastle than in Sydney.
We expect a bounce back, and $12.00 is a good price.
(3) Rustic Steel ($19.00)
He looked good beating Bandersnatch at Hawkesbury last start, and he could sneak into the money at nice odds.
Trained on the track by Kris Lees, the son of Deep Field owns three wins from five starts at Newcastle, so he loves running here.
Barrier three with Tim Clark riding could equal success.
(4) Far Too Easy ($4.00)
His win in the Kosciuszko was electric, and we’re not surprised by the money coming for him.
He’s seeking his 10th career win, and although he has yet to race at Newcastle, it’s a track that should suit his running style.
Barrier 13 is our only worry, but his class should take him close.
(5) Royal Merchant ($10.00)
We can’t get on board with the $10.00 for Royal Merchant. He hasn’t been far away this season, but we expected odds around $18.00.
His three attempts over this distance have yet to yield a win or place, and we can’t see that changing.
(6) Phearson ($23.00)
His form this preparation has been fair to say the least. A big improvement is needed to see him figure in the finish.
(7) Coastwatch ($35.00)
Being only a four-time winner makes it hard for us to back Coastwatch, despite the six-year-old having enough ability to win.
His most recent effort at Caulfield was terrible, and although he has since finished second at the trials, it’s not good enough for us.
(9) Cotehele ($14.00)
After opening at $10.00, there hasn’t been much support for Cotehele. However, he’s good enough to figure in the placings.
He is a two-time fresh up winner and a past winner at Newcastle, which is important. Having winning experience on this track could make the difference on Saturday.
(10) Chrysaor ($27.00)
We liked his fresh up win at Flemington but his subsequent starts in Sydney have been average in tough races.
Big improvement is needed to win him turn his form around.
(11) Diamond Diesel ($91.00)
He appears to be outclassed against this level of opposition. He likes Newcastle, but as the odds suggest, this will be too hard.
(12) Felix Majestic ($35.00)
He’s a runner that makes his own luck in front, but he could have company in the form of Coal Crusher.
53kg is ideal but we haven’t found room for him in our selections.
(13) Danny’s St Darci ($41.00)
Drifting odds after having a solid preparation, but she would need to improve on those efforts to win.
(14) Briasa (Best Bet – $2.70)
An up-and-coming type with five wins from six starts, including a win at Randwick by 3.3 lengths last time out.
We loved the way he found the line to put them away, and his turn-of-foot will only be better with more runners in the field.
With a light weight on her back, punters should feel confident of a winning performance.
