Race 1. (13:00) Bet365 Maiden (1300m)
#6 – Dark Simba @ $2.80
Dark Simba ended his last preparation with three consecutive second placings, including a second placing at Caulfield last start.
The three-year-old son of So You Think has faced fields deeper than this, so we’re not surprised by the shortening odds.
Barrier three is ideal, and he’s a good bet to break maidens.
Stake: 2 Units
Race 2. (13:35) Cub Maiden (1300m)
#10 – Elation and Joy @ $3.30
Elation and Joy wasn’t all that far away in two race day starts, and there is plenty of room for improvement.
The four-year-old daughter of Zoustar finished sixth at Kilmore but she was only 1.9 lengths behind the winner, so the run is better than it looks.
We’re happy with the current odds, so include her in picks.
Stake: 1.5 Units
Race 3. (14:05) Redford Excavations Maiden (1600m)
#12 – Sweltering @ $2.05
Punters got burned again last Sunday when Sweltering added another second placing to her record, but she gets another chance on that effort.
She finished only a nose behind the winner in a driving finish, and she wins a stride shorter of the post, so she shouldn’t have lost any admirers.
Include her in horse racing multis at the $2.05 odds.
Stake: 2 Units
Race 4. (14:40) Congratulations on Life Memberships BM64 (1600m)
#2 – Asawin @ $3.80
Asawin is another runner on a one-week back up after running fourth at Terang last start, and we’re sticking with him.
The four-year-old owns two wins and five placings from 15 starts, and it’s good to see his odds remain steady throughout the week.
Barrier four is ideal, so he’s good enough to handle this field.
Stake: 1 Unit
Race 5. (15:20) Ecycle Solutions BM64 (2700m)
#8 – Hey Bro’unga @ $2.90
Hey Bro’unga took 10 starts to break maidens but he could kick on with the job after breaking through at Pakenham.
The four-year-old son of Savabeel defeated only a field of five, but he had been threatening to win a race all season, so it was good to see him score.
After opening at $3.50, we’re not shocked to see money come for him.
Stake: 2 Units
Race 6. (15:55) Hewitt & Whitty Stawell BM70 (1100m)
#6 – Mansiere @ $6.50
Each-way value is with Mansiere, who is always around the mark, and he has taken on tough fields throughout his career.
He ran behind the likes of Moonhaven and Beast Mode in Melbourne before placing at Morphettville and Ballarat, so the form checks out.
Bookmakers are underrating his chances of winning, but we’re not.
Stake: 1.5 Units
Race 7. (16:35) Stuart & Judy McGregor Stawell Gold Cup (2000m)
#8 – Precious Charm @ $3.90
Boasting two wins already this prep is Precious Charm, who could keep winning for trainer Symon Wilde.
The five-year-old mare is win or bust, with 15 starts for six wins and no placings. She can be a risky bet, but she won by 6.3 lengths at Edenhope last start.
This is harder but she is the testing material, and the odds are worth taking.
Stake: 2 Units
Race 8. (17:05) Russ Studio Jewellers BM64 (1300m)
#9 – Gin Baba @ $2.25
Gin Baba is a model of consistency with a win and five placings from her last six starts.
The four-year-old daughter of Invincible Spirit broke maidens with a win at Ararat before running second at Cranbourne.
That is a good form guide for this race, so she could get back to her best.
Stake: 2 Units
