Spring Champion Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Attica ($3.90)
A nice type in the making after posting two wins from three starts, and he’s in good hands for this race.
He’s our second-best pick, and the $3.90 odds could shorten throughout the week. We believe Shangri La Boy is a touch better, but he should be right around the mark.
(2) Shangri La Boy (Best Bet – $3.30)
Couldn’t have been more impressive when winning at Rosehill. He owns good tactical speed, and he looks like a Group 1-winning colt in the making.
We wouldn’t be surprised to see him back up in the Derby should be come through this race in fine style, and this stable knows how to train them.
The $3.30 could firm to around $2.90 on Saturday.
(3) San Giovanni ($20.00)
Started his career with back-to-back wins, but he would need to improve on recent form to win this race.
He comes off consecutive placings behind some smart types, including our top pick, but he’s a first four chance at best. We can’t see him winning, but if you have room, include him in multiples.
(4) Officiate ($26.00)
Comes through a placing behind Options at Flemington, which is an interesting form guide. Might be better suited to the Victoria Derby, and the 2000m could be a touch too short.
(5) Master of the Air ($18.00)
We wouldn’t discount his chances based on his sixth in the Gloaming. He loomed to win before getting tired late, but the race wasn’t run to suit.
Chris Waller will have him fit and ready to fire, and he’s already a two-time winner this season, so the form checks out.
(6) Federalist ($20.00)
Better last start, but he still needs to find a few lengths to bridge the gap. We can’t see that happening.
(7) Champagne Hero ($14.00)
Ran as a $4.20 chance in the Gloaming and it’s still waiting to get out into clear running. He had no luck, so it’s a complete forgive run.
The colt by Maurice is bred to be winning over 2000m, and he could be the forgotten runner at double-figure odds.
(8) Tambeloa ($81.00)
It would take a big effort to win this race based on his form. The odds are accurate.
(9) Southern Prince ($31.00)
He comes off back-to-back wins at Kembla Grange, which is encouraging form. He makes a steep rise in class, but it could pay to follow any race day betting moves.
(10) Crusader Voyage ($31.00)
Knocking on the door after three consecutive second placings, but he has had his chances to win against easier fields.
We respect the stable, but it would be a big training feat to get enough improvement out of him to win.
(11) Within the Law (Best Each Way – $5.00)
She raced at Group 1 level against the older horses last week, and connections are desperate for success at the top level.
At her best, she’s good enough to beat this field, and the only worry is her fatigue. If the stable has her ready to go, she could finish over the top of them late.
(12) Queen of Clubs ($23.00)
Mixing her form this season, including a win four starts back. Given the depth of this field, we’re prepared to leave her out.
There has been some money for her at long odds, but it doesn’t interest us.
(13) The Pearls (Best Roughie – $16.00)
She kept fighting behind Shangri La Boy last start, and she gained our respect. She gets all favours from an inside draw with a light weight, so there’s nothing going against her.
We are loving the $16 odds available with bookmakers.
(14) Sheeza Diva ($35.00)
A winner this preparation, but it didn’t come in a tough race. We can’t see her improving enough to take this out.
(15) Pinot Nero ($151.00)
Races at big odds despite being a consistent type. Looking for something easier.
