South Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips
(1) Goldrush Guru ($9.00)
He led the field last week before weakening to fifth, and we can’t see him improving much on that effort.
Based on his form, he deserves a spot in first four picks, but he needs to get back to his best.
(2) Statuario (Best Bet – $4.00)
Statuario showed sustained speed when winning at Caulfield last start, and we’re happy to put him on top of our selections.
He started his career by showing a good turn-of-foot, which is always nice to have as a stayer. We expect his odds to shorten on race day, so take $4.
(3) Confetti Garden ($16.00)
He looked good when winning his first two races before taking on much harder opposition.
His efforts haven’t been too bad, but finishing 13th at Randwick is a concern, so we’re not including him in our picks.
(4) American Wolf ($7.00)
Gunning for three consecutive wins is American Wolf, who won at Ballarat before winning at Flemington in good style.
Rising to Group 1 level is a different beast, but he has improvement to come, and the each-way odds are worth taking.
(5) Saint Emilion (Best Roughie – $16.00)
The Ciaron Maher-trained gelding looks ready to fire over 2500m after finishing fourth at Morphettville last week.
That’s a good form guide for this race, and the $16 odds are much better than expected.
(6) Snoopy Now ($16.00)
He finished off well enough for sixth last week, and rising to 2500m only helps his chances of winning.
It’s a tough field and he won’t find this any easier, but we’re happy to include him in first four picks as his odds are shortening.
(7) Dubai Focus ($16.00)
The son of Pride of Dubai is another well-backed runner at odds, and he ran third behind Athanatos last week.
That’s a good form guide for the South Australian Derby, and he could be over the odds.
(8) Lavalier (Best Each Way – $6.00)
He looks to cap off consecutive second placings with a win having finished second behind Athanatos.
The James Cummings-trained gelding is only a one-time winner from 11 starts, but he’s much better than that, hence the odds.
Include him in picks at the each-way price.
(9) Politely Dun ($16.00)
It was good to see him show improvement when second at Caulfield, but he’s a tough stayer to trust at the best of times.
There are too many nice types to include him in picks.
(10) Roctave ($27.00)
The Kiwi ran third at Group 3 level last time out at Ellerslie. NZ form typically stacks up well over distance, but we can’t see him going close enough.
(11) Darknconfidential ($91.00)
Big odds for a runner with little chance of winning at Group 1 level.
(12) Compressing ($51.00)
Started his career with two wins before failing to fire last start. Found out by the harder opposition, which isn’t a good sign.
(13) Scintillante ($17.00)
Another runner that disappointed last week and bouncing back with something positive isn’t likely. The odds are way too short for our liking.
(14) Cavity Bay ($31.00)
Not too bad this season but nothing too good either. Prepared to wait for something easier.
(15) Femminile ($35.00)
Drifting odds, and after a moderate run last week, the odds could continue to drift.
(17) Captain Hilfiger ($151.00)
Big odds and little chance of winning. A wide draw doesn’t help.
(18) Global Eclipse ($16.00)
An interesting runner that broke maidens over 2025m at Cranbourne last start. It was a six-length win, so if he makes the field, don’t discount his chances.
(19) Gin Rummy ($151.00)
Big odds, which are accurate. Very little chance of beating half the field home.
