Preakness Stakes Form Guide & Tips

(1) Goal Oriented ($9.00)

He’s an undefeated Bob Baffert-trained runner, so it’s hard to leave him out of calculations.

His speed rating isn’t the highest, but he’s fresh after missing the Kentucky Derby, and there is enough betting support to warrant attention.

We’re including him in our multiples.

(2) Journalism (Best Bet – $2.00)

The wheels were spinning for Journalism in tough conditions in the Kentucky Derby, but he still managed to run second. He will be better suited to conditions at Pimlico, and we think he’s good enough to clear this field out.

We envision him winning by 3-4 lengths, and he could make up for the defeat. Take the $2 odds before money comes for him.

(3) American Promise (Best Roughie – $17.00)

American Promise is in the hands of D. Wayne Lukas, who has seven times in the Preakness Stakes, so that can’t be overlooked.

His performance in the Derby wasn’t flash but he’s another runner that didn’t enjoy the slop. We’re happy to give him another chance, and the odds are worth including.

(4) Heart of Honor ($21.00)

He ran second in the UAE Derby but we don’t rate that form. He’s consistent, but he finished second behind Admire Daytona, who subsequently ran last in the Derby.

His form doesn’t shape up good enough to win the Preakness Stakes.

(5) Pay Billy ($67.00)

He’s the outsider of the field at $67, and we can’t see him measuring up to this level. It might pay to follow him in something much easier.

(6) River Thames ($6.50)

Solid betting support has come for River Thames, who finished second behind Derby winner Sovereignty in the Fountain of Youth Stakes.

He also placed in the Blue Grass Stakes, so although he’s not our best each-way, he was very close. Punters can’t leave him out.

(7) Sandman (Best Each Way – $8.50)

The Arkansas Derby winner didn’t fire in the Derby, but he’s another runner we’re putting in the forgive file. The conditions were awful, and most didn’t handle it.

His form prior is good enough to win the Preakness, and punters get better odds than expected. Look for him to settle back and flash home late.

(8) Clever Again ($8.50)

There was good early support for Clever Again before drifting a touch. He owns just three career starts, but there is a fair amount of speed in his legs.

Jose Ortiz opted to ride Clever Again instead of Sandman, which is a good guide, so we’re not leaving him out of our Preakness Stakes picks.

(9) Gosger ($26.00)

We can’t see Gosger going well enough to win. His best win came at Group 3 level, and he needs to find a few lengths to beat this field.
