NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Legarto (Best Bet – $1.55)
Punters must take short odds but Legarto is one of the best mares in Australasia.
She owns 10 wins from 16 starts, including an Australian Guineas win in 2023. That form is tops for this race, hence the odds-on price.
Her winning return was good and she’s the one to beat.
(2) Belclare (Best Roughie – $15.00)
Lisa Latta lines up the seven-year-old, who had mixed form in Australia. She won at Randwick and Rosehill before struggling at Ascot at Group 1 level.
We were happy with her effort at Ellerslie last start, which suggests that she could be back to her best.
(3) Campionessa ($27.00)
A lack of recent winning form is a worry with Campionessa, so we’re choosing to leave her out of our NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes picks.
Her best form takes her close but we haven’t seen it this season.
(4) Town Cryer ($20.00)
We would prefer to back her in something easier, and we don’t think racing at Ellerslie helps her chances of winning.
She’s better going left handed, so wait for a better opportunity.
(5) Konasana (Best Each Way – $7.00)
The Waller-trained mare won at Wyong before crossing the Tasman and winning at Ellerslie, so she has the ability needed to win here.
She comes off a fourth behind El Vencedor, and there is less depth to this field with the exception of Legarto.
Take the value odds and include her in picks.
(6) Provence ($15.00)
Consistency hasn’t been her best attribute this season, but she owns five wins from 15 starts overall.
She is a two-time winner from three starts at Ellerslie, so getting back to this track could be enough to take her close.
We’re happy to include her in first four picks.
(7) Acquarello ($17.00)
The five-year-old mare was beaten by a half-length to Legarto last start at $43, and punters still get value odds.
We can’t see her winning the race but she’s good enough to run in the money.
(8) Imprevu ($20.00)
She didn’t show enough last time out and we can’t see that form turning around quick enough to include her in our NZ Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes tips.
(9) Kelly Coe ($35.00)
A good winner three back but this is a completely different race. We can’t see her improving enough to figure in the finish.
(10) Fall for Cindy ($35.00)
She is better for two runs back from a spell but the former Australian could struggle to show her best on Saturday.
With her best form, she’s a top four chance, and the $6.25 place odds are generous. If your budget can afford it, include her in first four plays.
(11) Jaarffi ($35.00)
She’s a two-time winner at Ellerslie but that form has come against much easier fields. The odds are about right.
(12) Merchant Queen ($35.00)
The four-year-old has a nice career ahead of her but winning this race could be a step too far.
(13) Moving Melody ($35.00)
Her effort at Matamata last start was discouraging, so we haven’t found room for her.
