Atkins showed good improvement to finish second at Ellerslie last time out behind Fantastic Smile, which is a good form guide.

The four-year-old mare by Savabeel gets the services of NZ’s leading jockey Craig Grylls, and he usually starts a meeting off well.

Barrier four is ideal, so take the odds.

Race 2. (10:06) Wanganui Owners Association Maiden (1340m)

#8 – Snowflake @ $9.00

Snowflake has been all around the mark so far, and based on her name, she should enjoy winter racing.

The four-year-old mare by Contributer ran second on debut before posting a sixth and fourth in two runs at Wanganui.

Having form at the track helps, so take the value odds.

Race 3. (10:38) Full Circle Appearance Medicine 2YO (1200m)

#2 – Spandeedo @ $3.50

The top two runners in the market are from the Allan Sharrock stable, and they’re equal favourites.

We’re going with Spandeedo, who ran second on debut before winning at Hawera by 1.5 lengths, which is the best form guide for this race.

Getting 2kg off his back could swing the race in his favour.

Race 4. (11:12) Wanganui Chronicle BM65 (1200m)

#3 – Popsagoosey @ $9.00

Trainer Lisa Latta often gets a winner at these meetings, and she lines up Popsagoosey at value odds.

The five-year-old son of Tivaci owns three wins and five placings from 27 starts, and although not always overly consistent, he’s good enough to beat this field.

Getting 3kg off his back is a bonus, so take the $9 odds.

Te Rapa racing tips

Race 1. (10:20) Waikato Draught 100 Years Maiden (1200m)

#6 – Sister Cynane @ $2.60

Sister Cynane has been backed and beaten at every start, but we’re happy to give her another chance against this field.

The well-bred filly by I Am Invincible owns three second placings from four starts, and she might enjoy the heavy conditions on Saturday.

Take the $2.60 odds, as they’re better than usual for her.

Race 2. (10:53) Ambient Group 3YO (1100m)

#2 – Honey Badger @ $1.90

Honey Badger got back to winning form last time out when winning by 8.5 lengths at Rotorua, which is a good form guide.

The three-year-old filly by El Roca has yet to fire in two runs at Te Rapa, but she could kick on with the job now.

She’s worth including in horse racing multi picks.

Race 3. (11:28) Wright Civil BM65 (2200m)

#2 – Raajoices @ $8.50

Value is with Raajoices, who is only a three-time winner, but all three wins came on heavy tracks.

The six-year-old son of Iffraaj is bred to handle the wet, and he’s also a two-time winner over the distance, so the stats read well.

1kg comes off his back and he gets the inside draw.

Race 4. (12:04) Matt Edwards Lime Group Maiden (1600m)

#2 – Eagle Rock @ $3.80

It has been a good start to the career of Eagle Rock, who ran second at Pukekohe and Wanganui.

The three-year-old son of El Roca battled on gamely last start, and there is less depth to this field on Saturday.

$3.80 is a fair price from bookmakers, and we expected slightly lower odds.
