It’s an even race to kick off Champion’s Day at Ellerslie, and we expect money to come for Flanagan.

The five-year-old mare by Swiss Ace is a three-time winner from 12 starts, including two wins at Ellerslie, and there’s nothing wrong with that form.

Ben Thompson comes to ride, which adds to our confidence.

Race 2. (11:32) Windsor Park Stud 3YO (1500m)

Getting close to posting another win is General Minari, who won on debut before rattling off consecutive third placings.

The three-year-old son of Menari didn’t enjoy the heavy surface last time out at Matamata, and racing at Ellerslie should be more to his liking.

Punters get double-figure odds, which are generous.

Race 3. (12:09) Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Classic (1400m)

We rate Australian form highly in New Zealand, and Chris Waller sends Chica Mojito for the Dubai Classic.

The five-year-old mare is only a two-time winner, but one of those wins came last time out at Wyong when beating a good field by two lengths.

Carrying 55kg is a steal, and she can handle an elite Kiwi field.

Race 4. (12:53) Haunui Farm King’s Plate (1200m)

#4 – Sweynesday @ $3.40

We were impressed with the effort from Sweynesday at Group 1 level last start when running third behind Jigsaw and Arkansas Kid.

Running third behind the Australian’s was a top effort, and he has more upside than current race favourite Alabama Lass, who was disappointing when running seventh in the same race.

He loves Ellerslie, and we’re confident of a big effort.

New Plymouth racing tips

Race 1. (10:00) Multi Ethnic Xtravaganza Europe 3YO (1400m)

#5 – Oh Maimai @ $2.35

Money has come for Oh Maimai in the opener at New Plymouth, following wins at New Plymouth and Otaki.

The three-year-old filly by Derryn is unbeaten over 1400m, and having winning form at New Plymouth only adds to her appeal.

Dropping to 55kg is enough to warrant inclusion in picks.

Race 2. (10:35) Multi Ethnic Xtravaganza Asia Handicap (1200m)

#3 – Basel Warrior @ $2.80

Basel Warrior is not a fan of heavy surfaces, so it could pay to forgive his most recent effort at Matamata.

The four-year-old son of Swiss Ace looked good prior to that with wins at Te Rapa and Wanganui, and that form bodes well for this race.

Coming off a third placing on debut is The Black Prince, who was only two lengths behind the winner in a close-up effort.

The Alan Sharrock-trained gelding had solid betting support on debut, which is a good sign, and he could improve with racing.

Getting $7 is a better price than expected, so take the value odds.
