Mufhasa Classic Form Guide & Tips

(1) Waitak (Best Bet – $3.30)

He has been excellent this season with wins at Te Rapa and Ellerslie, and his distance range is better than most.

He won the Railway Stakes over 1200m and his most recent win came over 2040m. He’s versatile, and he’s armed with a big turn-of-foot.

We’re happy to put him clearly on top.

(2) Ladies Man ($8.50)

It’s never easy to know what he’s going to do, but we’re putting him in our first four picks based on his form at Trentham.

He owns two wins and two placings at the Wellington track, and that could be enough to see his form turn around.

(3) Agera ($31.00)

Shooting for four consecutive wins, but he would need to find a length or two. His best form comes against slightly easier than Group 1 opposition.

(4) One Bold Cat ($31.00)

The seven-year-old was better last time out, but he would need to show his best form to have any chance as an outsider.

(5) Khafre ($31.00)

He produced a better run for third last start, but we don’t rate him as a genuine Group 1 contender, hence the drifting odds.

(6) Legarto ($3.60)

A lovely mare that has been disappointing in two runs back from a spell. She might have needed those runs for her fitness, so we’re prepared to give her another chance.

Getting the inside draw could switch her on, and her exhibition trial was a good piece of work.

(7) La Crique (Best Each Way – $4.50)

She is a nine-time winner despite having five consecutive second placings. She keeps finding one better right on the line, but she is all class.

She will likely sit on the outside of a runner from barrier 10, and if she’s there to strike at the top of the straight, she could hold off the fast-finishing charge of Waitak.

(8) Provence (Best Roughie – $11.00)

A mare with plenty of upside following a win at Pukekohe. This is a tough test, but she is a two-time winner over the mile.

She’s currently on the outside looking in compared to the favourites, but she’s our best roughie as she’s clearly better than many of these.

(9) Ears Back ($61.00)

It’s hard to see her figure in the finish. Her barrier manners aren’t good, and she’s not blessed with the speed of some of these.

(10) Captured by Love ($8.50)

She scored a two-length win at Riccarton, but she is a bit short in betting markets. We rated her at around $12, and most of her form comes at age-group level.

Facing the older horses could make it too tough, so she’s only being included in our first four picks.

(11) Bedtime Story ($51.00)

Never too far away from the mark, but those runs come at lower levels. Unlikely to keep up with them.

(12) Loose Sally ($61.00)

She scored a good win at Wingatui, but southern form is unlikely to hold up well.
