Hong Kong Gold Cup Form Guide & Tips
(1) Voyage Bubble (Best Bet – $1.44)
He has emerged as the best middle-distance horse in Hong Kong after winning consecutive Group 1 titles.
He won the Steward’s Cup by two lengths as a $1.80 favourite last start, and we’re not surprised by the shorter odds.
$1.44 is on the shorter side, but with James McDonald riding, he’s the one to beat.
(2) Galaxy Patch (Best Each Way – $4.33)
The five-year-old did well to finish second behind Voyage Bubble last start and he’s good enough to turn the tables.
He is an eight-time winner from 17 starts, including seven wins at Sha Tin, so he can’t be ruled out as a winning chance.
(3) Changcheng Glory ($10.00)
He got back to winning form when taking out the Centenary Vase at Group 3 level, which followed some struggling runs at Group 1 level.
We thought he would be at longer odds than $10, and although we’re not leaving him out, we’re hoping his odds drift a touch on race night.
(4) Ensued ($13.00)
Ensured is always a trifecta chance if he brings his best form, and he looked good winning earlier this preparation.
The five-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid also ran fourth behind Romantic Warrior in the Jockey Club Cup, which is a good form guide.
We’re including him in first four picks.
(5) Happy Together (Best Roughie – $34.00)
Punters get value place odds for Happy Together, who ran second two starts back and his best form can take him close.
He’s not the easiest runner to follow, but compared to many runners in this field, his $34 odds are better value.
(6) Straight Arron ($23.00)
We haven’t been impressed with his form this season and we can’t see that turning around in this race.
He’s another runner at shorter odds than expected considering there is a $1.44 favourite.
(7) Five G Patch ($41.00)
His form is slowing improving this campaign but it’s not good enough to warrant attention at the big odds.
(8) La City Blanche ($71.00)
Consistency isn’t favouring La City Blanche, who is likely to be outclassed by the more fancied runners.
We would prefer to back him in something much easier.
(9) Sword Point ($71.00)
His best form has come at lower levels, and he’s only a two-time winner at Sha Tin, which doesn’t bode well for this race.
(10) Winning Dragon ($51.00)
He comes off three consecutive second placings but not at Group 1 level. Not suited to this race.
