Herbie Dyke Stakes Form Guide & Tips

(1) Kingswood (Best Bet – $2.60)

The Australian made them look second-rate in the Zabeel Classic, and it was thanks to a heads-up ride for Rory Hutchings.

He made a mid-race move and put them away to score by 1.5 lengths in the Group 1, and Australian form is superior to Kiwi form right now.

We expect him to be tough to beat as the $2.50 favourite.

(2) El Vencedor ($10.00)

He was NZ’s best horse for about a year, but after showing nothing last time out at Ellerslie, there are big concerns about him.

He dropped out quickly in the straight after getting a good run in transit, but he’s too good to completely leave out. Include him in first four picks.

(3) Doctor Askar ($23.00)

He’s not always an easy runner to follow, but despite winning at Trentham last start, we don’t rate him as a genuine Group 1 horse, especially when the Aussies come over.

His only run at Te Rapa didn’t produce a win or placing, so we’re opting to leave him out.

(4) The Odyssey ($23.00)

His recent form is solid without being amazing, including three consecutive placings. He loves running at Te Rapa with two wins, but this is a level up from what he has been facing.

The $23 odds are about right, and he would need to find 3-4 lengths to win.

(5) Nereus ($35.00)

He comes off a seventh in Group 3 company, so he should struggle at the top level. We’d prefer to see him in something much easier.

(6) Son of Sun ($23.00)

A better effort for second last time out, but he’s another runner that could struggle in the top grade. $23 is a touch below where we priced him.

(7) He’s a Battler ($81.00)

He’s enjoying a good winning run, but the $81 odds are telling. We can’t see him figuring in the finish.

(8) Legarto ($4.20)

She was a star of the NZ turf at one stage, but despite having no wins this season, she loves racing at Te Rapa.

The six-year-old mare owns three wins from four starts at Te Rapa, and because of that, she’s worth including in picks.

Having Opie Bosson riding is a bonus, so include in picks.

(9) Hinekaha (Best Roughie – $10.00)

She is a progressive mare with five wins and three placings from 10 starts, including her only start at Te Rapa.

Her best wins haven’t come at Group 1 level, but she has shown an ability to cope with the best going around in NZ.

We’re happy with the odds available.

(10) Knobelas (Best Each Way – $3.80)

Craig Williams is a legendary rider, but he didn’t give Knobelas much chance of winning at Ellerslie.

The four-year-old mare is a smart Australian runner who only got clear late at Ellerslie, despite having a chance to come down the outside at the top of the straight.

She is a smart type, and worthy of winning a Group 1.
