Canterbury Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Gringotts ($8.50)
He is too good to leave out of selections. He tends to hit the ground running, and although yet to win over this distance, his natural ability to win races could take him close.
(2) Headley Grange ($27.00)
His efforts to win three consecutive races last preparation were excellent, but he failed to fire last time out.
This distance might be short of his best, and we don’t think he’s at the same level as most of these.
(3) Linebacker (Best Roughie – $10.00)
Linebacker is paying better odds than expected. He blew away his rivals two starts back before finishing seventh in the Golden Eagle.
He’s undefeated in two runs over the distance, and he comes off a trial win at Randwick, so the double-figure odds are generous.
(4) Yorkshire ($12.00)
Eight wins from 11 starts, so there is plenty of potential. We’re unsure if he’s a genuine Group 1 contender, and the odds are too short for our liking.
A potential first four candidate, but he needs to keep improving.
(5) Encap ($91.00)
He’s not running well enough to compete at the top level. His last preparation was well below his best, so we’re putting him to the side.
(6) Joliestar (Best Bet – $2.45)
It’s tough to look past a winner with eight wins and seven placings from 18 starts, with many of those wins coming at Group 1 level.
She is the one they need to beat after another gutsy effort fresh up, and we thought she would be slightly shorter in betting markets.
Take the $2.45 for the best horse in the race.
(7) Lady Shenandoah (Best Each Way – $4.60)
She owns an electric turn-of-foot, and although she hasn’t won for some time now, she’s too good for that to keep happening.
She has been facing elite fields, including running in The Everest, and because of her racing pattern, she needs things to go her way.
Given how much speed there is in this race, she could finish off best.
(8) Beiwacht ($9.00)
He needed the fresh up run, but he might be one run short of his best. The odds are slightly shorter than expected for a runner looking for the mile.
(9) Napoleonic ($9.50)
Second behind Ninja in the Hobartville, and he drops in distance for this run. He’s a hard runner to get a line on, and he could be outsprinted by the favourites.
We’re looking to back the established sprinters in this race, and he’s not one of them.
(10) Nepotism ($61.00)
Big odds and rightfully so. He needs more time.
