Belmont Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Hill Road (Best Roughie – $10.00)
There has been some support for Hill Road, who started his career in Ireland before coming to the US for a Breeders Cup Juvenile race.
He has been solid since that effort, winning the Peter Pan Stakes. That’s not always the best form guide for the Belmont Stakes, but he owns a third placing in the Tampa Bay Derby, and he’s a fresh runner.
(2) Sovereignty (Best Each Way – $3.00)
His win in the Kentucky Derby was something special, and although $3 isn’t an each-way price, we’re backing him to finish second behind Journalism.
It’s hard to know if the wet conditions at Churchill Downs helped him win, but either way, the form has been franked, and he should finish in the first two home.
(3) Rodriguez ($8.00)
He has yet to finish worse than third from five starts, including a win in the Wood Memorial. Our biggest worry is that he missed the Derby and Preakness Stakes due to injury, but there is some betting support.
Bob Baffert trains the colt by Authentic, so we’re happy to include him in trifecta and first four picks based on ability.
(4) Uncaged ($67.00)
The son of Curlin finished sixth in the Peter Pan Stakes behind Hill Road, and we can’t see him turning that form around.
The odds are justified, and he’s looking for something much easier than the grueling Belmont Stakes.
(5) Crudo ($26.00)
History doesn’t favour Crudo winning the Belmont Stakes. He won a lower graded race on Preakness Stakes Day, meanwhile Journalism was winning the feature race.
He needs to find many lengths to keep in contact with the favourites.
(6) Baeza ($4.50)
Baeza was only a neck behind Journalism in the Derby, and there has been good betting support for him throughout the week.
We don’t think he’s as dynamic as the two favourites, but his form suggests he’ll be right behind them approaching the turn, and it will be battle of the fittest from there.
He can’t be left out at the each-way odds.
(7) Journalism (Best Bet – $2.70)
We’re happy to label Journalism a “freak”. His Preakness Stakes win, where he was hammered at the top of the straight, was amazing, and we don’t use that word lightly.
He had no right to win the second leg of the Triple Crown, and we believe it was only the sloppy track at Churchill Downs which ended his Triple Crown bid.
He has a lovely action, and he could put this field away with another late burst.
(8) Heart of Honor ($67.00)
Stranger things have happened on the racecourse, but his form doesn’t measure up.
