Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips
(1) Willydoit (Best Each Way – $4.00)
The New Zealand Derby winner looks the goods, and he’s a strong winning chance. He’ll likely sit close to the pace and kick strongly.
$4 is a fair price from bookmakers.
(2) Goldrush Guru (Best Roughie – $12.00)
He was ridden upside down last start, and by all accounts, he’ll be ridden more patiently this time around.
He’s a classy type with a Victorian Derby win under his belt, so don’t discount.
(3) Thedoctoroflove ($18.00)
He ran second in the NZ Derby, but he never looked like a winning hope. The form in behind doesn’t look strong, so we’re not taking the $18 odds.
(4) Shanwah ($11.00)
A first four chance despite having not faced Group 1-level opposition. A winner of four on the bounce, so he goes into the mix on form alone.
(5) Plymouth ($13.00)
Nearing a big performance and it’s another first four chance. Bred to enjoy some sting out of the ground, so although he can be tough to follow, we’re not leaving him out.
(6) Pocketing ($27.00)
A game winner on Tuesday but backing up five days later in the Derby is tough. Could be better to wait for a better situation to back him.
(7) Firm Agreement ($21.00)
A good finish to run behind behind Pocketing on Tuesday but he’s another runner that could struggle with the back-up, having raced in heavy conditions.
(8) King of Thunder ($12.00)
Another runner coming out of the Pocketing race, and although he has more upside than the others, we’re not surprised by the betting drift.
It would be a big effort to run two good races in a week, especially over 2400m, but he could finish in the top four.
(9) Golden Century ($34.00)
The New Zealand runner raced too keenly on Tuesday, and according to trainer Tony Pike, he’s not the smartest type.
That’s a worry, so we’re not including him in our Australian Derby picks.
(10) Imperialist ($91.00)
Nearing a win after three consecutive placings, but the win is unlikely to come at Group 1 level.
(11) Mustang Morgan ($46.00)
Another runner coming out of the NZ Derby, and he would need to improve to figure in the finish.
(12) Red Aces ($71.00)
His form last spring was solid, but he hasn’t quite come back this time in. Hugh Bowman rides, but the odds tell the story.
(13) Confetti Garden ($41.00)
Fifth on Tuesday, and he could struggle with the back-up.
(14) Tsitsipas ($81.00)
He comes off consecutive wins in much easier races, and he’s unlikely to score an ace on Saturday.
(15) Autumn Aroha ($101.00)
Big odds and he will struggle to keep up with them.
(16) Bernen Win ($126.00)
A winner three back but this company should be too rich for him.
(17) Kosuke ($151.00)
Another runner at massive odds and we can’t have him.
(18) Aeliana (Best Bet – $3.60)
She owns a good turn-of-foot, and she sprinted hard to finish second behind Broadsiding last time out.
Her turn-of-foot is good enough to put this field away, and that’s an asset she possesses that most don’t in this field.
(19) Flying Argento ($251.00)
Massive odds following a win, and add him to the strugglers list.
(20) Deal ‘N’ Dash ($27.00)
Drifting with bookies after opening at $19. That’s a concern, so it could pay to watch market moves during the week.
(21) Format ($126.00)
Caught wide on Tuesday and that run could have him struggling here.
(22) So You Are ($151.00)
Big odds and little chance of winning.
(23) Black Babylon ($126.00)
Yet to win and that’s unlikely to change.
