National Derby Form Guide & Tips

(1) Zipping Columbus ($27.00)

There is nothing wrong with his form, but he’s unlikely to figure in the finish. He would need to improve his best time, and we can’t see that happening.

(2) Late in Winter ($5.00)

Second behind Wyndra All Heart last start when getting run down it the shadows of the post. That was a strong effort, and he could settle on the speed again.

We’re happy to include him in our picks at the price.

(3) King of Gods (Best Bet – $3.20)

Three wins from his last four starts, and his win to qualify for the final was an excellent effort to beat Ritza Tears.

He didn’t jump as well as others, but he found his best down the back straight to reel them in late, which is a good sign.

It’s a tough field, but he stands out.

(4) Ritza Tears ($4.20)

He lost no admirers when running second to the favourite last start, and his best time is more than competitive.

His chances hinge on how well he starts, and if he lands in front of King of Gods, he could pull out enough to hold on this time around.

(5) Winsome Storm ($11.00)

He’s struggling to win races, and getting a middle trap with speed on his inside could all but end his chances.

(6) Freight Express (Best Roughie – $11.00)

Punters always get good odds for Freight Express, who keeps winning after posting three wins from his last four starts.

We think he’s being underrated in betting markets, so take the $11 odds as a value bet.

(7) Wyndra All Heart (Best Each Way – $4.80)

Four wins and nine placings from 15 starts, and her 29.67 best time is enough to take him close in the National Derby.

There is a worry that he’ll be pushed wide around the first turn, but if he can clear traffic, he could pick them up down the back straight.

(8) Red Rock Razzle ($7.50)

His heat win came over Winsome Storm, and we don’t rate that as the best form guide. Therefore, we’re not taking the $7.50, which is shorter than expected.

(9) Ascend Fern ($14.00)

Unlikely to get a run, and we don’t think he’s a winning chance unless he secured the inside draw.

(10) Loco Storm ($13.00)

Needs a miracle to get into the field. Respect the trainer, but he looks held.
