Melbourne Cup Form Guide & Tips

(1) Valenzuela ($4.40)

Running well after back-to-back wins, and he will enjoy leaving from the inside trap. He showed good toughness to win the heat, and if he jumps well, he could lead into the first turn.

It’s going to be a hectic race, but he’s good enough to win.

(2) Canya Mayhem ($3.60)

The current favourite following a 3.5-length heat win. He is another runner with good early speed, and clearing Valenzuela will be key.

If he’s able to do that, he could win, but it all depends on the start. He’s going into all our picks, but we’d love slightly longer odds.

(3) Accredited (Best Each Way – $4.00)

He has come into his own this preparation, and he scored an all-the-way win in the heat by six lengths.

That was an impressive effort, and although he has speed either side of him, luck should take him a long way. He’s running in career-best form, so he’s our best each-way Melbourne Cup tip.

(4) Spritely Sian ($51.00)

She was a minor upset winner in the heat, and we don’t think it was the strongest heat win. That’s reflected in betting markets, so we’re happy to leave her out.

(5) Dashing Slay (Best Bet – $4.60)

One of our favourite greyhounds to back. She returned to her blistering best with a heat win over Paw Petrov, and he has better mid-race pace than most in this field.

Starting well would be great, but even if she doesn’t, she can sit just off the pace and come with a winning run down the back straight.

Take the $4.60, as she would be around $2.40 with an inside or outside draw.

(6) Paw Zuri ($14.00)

Too good for Eriza Sparkles in the heat. That’s a handy form guide for the greyhound Melbourne Cup, but there are some slick types in this race.

She might be a length or two behind the best.

(7) Intrepidus ($8.00)

Shorter in the market than expected. We priced him at around $12, but the odds are likely because he’s drawn out wide.

His early speed is enough to cross the field, so if he picks the jump, the $8 odds could be right. However, we believe one or two runners kick up underneath him, and he could get shuffled back.

(8) Daysea’s Rory (Best Roughie – $12.00)

Never count out Daysea’s Rory, as he showed in the heat. The Queenslander loves winning big races, and he should go close with luck.

If there is a lot of squeezing going on, she could bide her time out wide and scoot around the field. $12 is a good price.

(9) Zipper on Time ($4.40)

Beaten as a $1.30 chance in the heat, but certainly not disgraced. She goes into the mix if she gets a run, but it’s rare to get a scratching in the greyhound Melbourne Cup.

(10) Zelda Covilha ($13.00)

Unlikely to run, and he might need to find a length or two.
