We have expert betting tips for the 2021 Northern Trust Open this week, which is the first tournament during the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
The top 125 players from the PGA Tour embark on Liberty National Golf Course, and heading the online betting markets is Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson.
We look at the best Northern Trust Open value picks.
The Northern Trust Predictions
—
2021 The Northern Trust Winner – Rory McIlroy
It has been a strange season for Rory McIlroy, but the Northern Irishman can win this week.
He recorded a T12 finish at the WGC St. Jude Invitational, and although his short game has failed him over the last few years, there is plenty of room for improvement.
McIlroy is now the best driver on tour, so he has that going for him and if the flat stick starts working, it’s tough to slow him down.
A former winner of the FedEx Cup, he knows what it takes. Winning The Northern Trust would propel him up the rankings, and he’s on the verge of getting back to his best form. He already owns this season when winning the Wells Fargo Championship, so he demands respect.
Punters get $19 for McIlroy to lead after four rounds, and that value is worth snapping up.
Bet: Rory McIlroy @ $19

2021 The Northern Trust Next Best – Viktor Hovland
The 23-year-old Norwegian didn’t play well at the WGC St. Jude Invitational, but he might have been fatigued after a busy schedule.
Hovland looked much better when recording a T12 finish at The Open and scoring a win on the European Tour at the BMW International Open. He got the better of the likes of Martin Kaymer and Victor Dubuisson, so it was a quality field.
His two PGA Tour wins have come against slightly easier fields in the Puerto Rico Open and Mayakoba Classic, but he’s a classy player who is always around the mark. He finished T2 at the WGC Workday Championship earlier this year, so winning The Northern Trust isn’t beyond him.
Bookmakers have Viktor Hovland at $29 to win. We’re happy to take those odds and we’re expecting them to firm throughout the week.
Bet: Viktor Hovland @ $29

2021 The Northern Trust Best Value – Paul Casey
There is no reason why Paul Casey is paying $36 to win The Northern Trust. He is in stellar form, and we think he has a chance of winning the FedEx Cup.
The Englishman won the 2021 Omega Dubai Desert Classic in January, and despite not winning on the PGA Tour since 2019, he finished T5 at the WGC St. Jude Invitational. That is a stellar form guide for the playoffs and he’s on the verge of breaking through.
We love the value with Paul Casey, and he plays some of his best golf in big tournaments, so don’t leave him off your ticket.
Bet: Paul Casey @ $36

2021 The Northern Trust First Round Leader – Jordan Spieth
Leading a field of 125 after one round isn’t easy, but Jordan Spieth is getting back to his best form, and he has been well-backed to win.
He typically starts his tournaments off with a good opening round, and there is plenty of confidence in betting markets. Spieth is on the second line of betting at $29, and he could come out of the gates firing at Liberty National.
Jon Rahm currently heads first round leader markets but take Spieth for better value.
Bet: Jordan Spieth @ $29

The Northern Trust Top Australian Player – Cameron Smith
Adam Scott heads the market but given his choke when missing a short putt to win last week, his confidence levels might be low.
Our top pick is Cameron Smith, who finished T5 at the St. Jude and that’s the best form guide coming into The Northern Trust.
Smith is rarely too far away, and the Queenslander could make a run for the FedEx Cup. He currently sits in 16th position, which puts him ahead of the likes of Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy.
Smith is having a terrific year and he’s the one Australian to follow this week.
Bet: Cameron Smith @ $3.30
