We have backed Hawthorn loyally all year, and although we didn’t expect them to finish as low as eighth, they’re still a premiership-quality team.

The Hawks got the better of GWS earlier this year when winning 76-64 at home, and although this game is on the road, we can’t see the Hawks getting bounced out of the playoffs in the first week. They are too talented for that to happen, so we’re including them in our picks.

The likes of Jack Gunston, Nick Watson, and Mabior Chol will need big scoring games, but we see no reason to jump off their backs following a loss to Brisbane. They defeated Collingwood 110-46 just three weeks ago, so that’s an excellent form guide for this finals game.

Gunston and Chol are keys to Hawthorn’s success, and we believe they will rise to the occasion. Chol was on fire early against the Lions last week when scoring their first three goals, and he could be in for a repeat effort.

He is a $2.50 chance to score a double, and his involvement in the offence is crucial. If he’s busy, the Hawks are a much better team. The same goes for Gunston, who had only two goals last week in a disappointing effort.

It was disappointing because he had 18 goals from his previous four games, including seven against Melbourne. If Gunston is anywhere near his best, scoring three goals shouldn’t be too difficult in what should be a high-scoring game.
