A-League Round 16 Expert Tips & Predictions

While relatively inconceivable just weeks ago, the Newcastle Jets are now the standard setters at the top of the A-League table.

Five wins on the spin have propelled them to such dizzying heights and they will be eager to hold off the advances of the likes of Sydney FC and Auckland FC in behind them.

Very little splits the rest of the sides in the top eight, with just seven points between the Jets and Melbourne Victory down in eighth spot.

The foot of the table sees Western Sydney Wanderers just a point behind Central Coast Mariners but they, along with Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory know that a couple of decent results would push them out of trouble too.

It hasn’t been a particularly inspiring season for either Wellington Phoenix or Melbourne Victory thus far, but both sides will be eager to pick up important points in this one. Phoenix worked hard for a home point against Melbourne City last weekend, a result they will hope to build on in front of their home fans. Melbourne Victory meanwhile remain in eighth place, but performances nor results have set the world alight this term. This could be cagey, which should suit Victory and they could pick up the points here.

Macarthur FC will be looking to keep the pressure up on the sides above them in the A-League table, as they welcome Perth Glory to town. Sat in fourth, it has been a decent campaign so far for Macarthur and they have their playoff aspirations firmly within their own hands. For Perth Glory, picking up results remains their key objective, and they are beginning to look like a side that could challenge for the top six. Home advantage could make the difference though and Macarthur FC look well placed to win this one.

Two of the sides locked in the top three in the A-League table meet here, as Auckland FC host Sydney FC. Recent results and more importantly performances have lacked inspiration for Auckland FC, and they do look to be at a crucial crossroads in their season. Sydney FC are in a similar boat, and their star-studded squad should have enough in it to be pushing for the A-League title at the end of the season. This one feels very tight to call, making the draw the percentage play here in New Zealand.

Brisbane Roar vs Central Coast Mariners

Brisbane Roar’s dramatic drop in form will be a huge concern for them, but they have the chance to get back on track here against Central Coast Mariners. Roar have lost four of their last five games and are beginning to look like a side potentially dropping out of the playoff mix. Central Coast meanwhile have languished down at the foot of the table all season, but they know that a couple of decent results can turn things around. This does feel like its coming at the right moment for Brisbane Roar though, who could do with a win in this one.

Can anybody stop the Newcastle Jets at the moment? The next team to try and stop the bandwagon is Adelaide United, in what should be an absolute cracker in South Australia. United are unbeaten in their last four games and sit fourth as a result, with playoff and title aspirations of their own. For the Jets, carrying on their excellent run of form feels like the key objective, as they look to distance themselves at the top of the table. This should be a very good one, with Newcastle Jets looking well placed to win again.
